Laptops with Nvidia RTX 4090 through to 4050 GPUs are about to go on sale
Nvidia’s Lovelace laptop GPUs are on the way, and we already knew that portables with these RTX 4000 graphics cards would come out in February. Now, we know when the different cards should come out next month.
This comes from the Chinese tech site IT Home, which was brought to our attention by Wccftech via VideoCardz. As always, rumours should be taken with a grain of salt, but the claim is that Nvidia will first launch the RTX 4090 and 4080 models on February 8.
The report says that’s when these laptops will start shipping, but that you’ll be able to order them a week early on February 1.
Later this month, on February 22, laptops with the RTX 4070, 4060, and 4050 GPUs will go on sale.
The lower-end RTX 40 laptops coming out later this month start at $999 (about £820 or AU$1,430), while the RTX 4080 and 4090 laptops start at $1,999 (about £1,640 or AU$2,620).
We’ve already seen that laptops with the Lovelace flagship will be very expensive. XMG showed us the price of an upgrade to the RTX 4090. The price of XMG’s Neo 16 gaming laptop goes up by an eye-popping €1,687 (about $1,830, £1,500, or AU$2,630), and that’s just the cost of upgrading the GPU.
Analysis: A swift launch for the Lovelace laptop range
If this is true, you’ll be able to pre-order a laptop with an RTX 4090 or 4080 in just a little over two weeks. And by the end of February, all Lovelace mobile graphics cards will be available in notebooks, so Nvidia isn’t taking its time putting the whole line into laptops.
This seems especially important when you think that, so far, only the RTX 4090, 4080, and 4070 Ti have been released for desktops, and those came out at different times (the 4070 Ti has only just got here).
We wouldn’t bet on it, but it’s possible that the RTX 4070, RTX 4060, or even the RTX 4050 will be released for desktop PCs in the near future. However, the RTX 4060 and RTX 4050 are designed for laptops. Recent rumours say that the desktop RTX 4060 is still a long way off, and that Nvidia might not even think about releasing it until enough of its lower-end RTX 3000 stock has been sold.
As we already said, the price of the laptop RTX 4090 is not for people who are cheap. In fact, it costs just as much as the desktop RTX 4090 and has the same performance as the desktop RTX 4080. (Remember that the mobile 4090 is built on the AD103 chip and only has 9,728 CUDA Cores, while the desktop 4090’s AD102 chip has 16,384 CUDA Cores.)
