The EliteBook 865 G9 is a laptop with a sleek design (14.12 x 9.88 x 0.76 in) and a high-quality build. It can handle demanding office tasks with ease and looks great while doing so.
UNBOXING
Upon opening the box of the EliteBook 865 G9, we were immediately impressed by the sleek, slim profile and premium feel of the device. Alongside the laptop, nestled securely in a foam insert, there were also accessories such as a power adapter and quick start guide.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The first things we thought about the HP EliteBook 865 G9 were mostly good. The keyboard deck and black brushed metal finish on the laptop give it a business-like look. The MIL-STD 810H rating and high-quality materials give the laptop a solid, high-end feel.
DESIGN AND BUILD QUALITY
The EliteBook 865 G9’s security is one of the things that stands out to us most about how it is made.
The touchpad on the laptop has a fingerprint scanner built in, which makes it easy for users to log in quickly and securely. The laptop also has a webcam privacy shutter built in, which lets users control when the camera is on and physically block unwanted surveillance.
The black brushed metal finish on the lid and keyboard deck of the EliteBook 865 G9 gives it a professional, business-like look. This laptop was built with MIL-STD-810G protection, which is a military standard that outlines environmental test methods and guidelines for the design and testing of military equipment and systems to make sure they can be used in different environmental conditions. HP testing shows that it can survive 26 drops from 30″ on every side. It also has a lot of different ways to connect, like two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a USB-C port, an HDMI port, two USB-A ports, a headphone jack, and Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. We saw that the power brick that came with the laptop could be plugged into either USB-C port to charge it.
IN USE
With its AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 6850U processor and 16GB of RAM, the HP EliteBook 865 G9 performs very well. It can easily handle demanding tasks like advanced spreadsheets, basic video editing, running multiple apps at once, or having a lot of tabs open in a web browser. The 512GB SSD makes it easy to get to files quickly, and the keyboard has well-spaced keys that are comfortable to use.
We’ve been using the keyboard for a few weeks now, and we’ve been happy with how it feels. It’s not too soft, and it doesn’t click too much. The touchpad is responsive and easy to use, and the fingerprint scanner is a handy security feature that we used when Windows Hello didn’t recognise our face or when the camera shutter was closed.
The EliteBook 865 G9 has great performance and a lot of ways to connect to other devices. It also has great security.
The device has several security features built into its hardware and software. These include HP Sure Start, which is a self-healing BIOS that helps to stop malware before the device starts up, so you can start it with confidence that it is safe, HP Sure Click, which helps to make each click safer by opening untrusted websites and files in their own virtual containers or micro-virtual machines to contain and stop the transfer of malware, and HP Sure Sensing (a constant watchful eye that helps to prevent malware, zero-day ransomware, and Advanced Persistent Threats and protects against a range of threats, including malware and viruses).
These features work together to give the device strong security. The best thing about these programmes is that they mostly run themselves automatically in the background. We never had to do anything with these, except check every setting on a laptop because we are obsessive.
We don’t have to do anything to use HP SureStart. It is set up to work automatically in the background to find and fix problems with the BIOS.
HP Sure Click is an extension for supported web browsers that we decided to instal to make browsing the web more secure. To use HP Sure Click, we just need to turn it on in our browser. Once we do that, it will automatically block potentially dangerous websites and downloads.
HP Sure Sense is also made to work automatically in the background to keep malware from attacking our device. We don’t have to do anything special to use HP Sure Sense, but we might have to make sure it’s turned on and up to date.
We didn’t feel like we were missing anything when we used this laptop for a few weeks.
We liked the larger screen, and the quality was good enough for our usual tasks (spreadsheets, writing, Slack, research, emails, light photo editing, etc.). If you work professionally with photos or videos, you may want a better screen, as most professional photographers want a screen with a higher resolution, usually 4K or higher. We kept forgetting about the Numpad to the right of the keyboard, but when we did, it made entering numbers into a spreadsheet much easier.
Lastly, the extra weight (1.36kg/3lb) is a fair trade-off for the larger screen (35.56cm/14in). Even though it weighs more and takes up more space in a bag (13.3 x 9.2 x 0.6 in) than most smaller laptops, we thought it was worth it.
FINAL VERDICT
The HP EliteBook 865 G9 is a great business laptop that enterprise and power users should look into.
It’s a great choice because of how well it looks, how well it’s made, and how well it works. It also has top-notch security features. Even though it might not be the best choice for gaming or other tasks that require a lot of graphics, it is a great all-around laptop that will meet the needs of most people.
