STEPS FOR HOW TO SCREENSHOT ON A CHROMEBOOK

  1. Find which method your Chromebook uses
  2. Take your screenshot
  3. Find your screenshot file to edit and share

STEP BY STEP GUIDE FOR HOW TO SCREENSHOT THE WHOLE SCREEN ON A CHROMEBOOK

1. Find the screenshot shortcut keys

Depending on the form factor of your Chromebook, different keys may be used to take a screenshot.

If you have them, press the Ctrl + display windows key (this is the function key with the rectangle and two trailing lines, located between the full-screen and brightness reduction buttons). If this were a standard function key, it would be F5).

Do you have a Chromebook without these function keys? Simply tap the power button and the volume down key simultaneously.

2. (Optional) Use the browser menu

If you do not have access to a keyboard or even the power button, you can take a screenshot by selecting Menu > Additional tools > Take screenshot from the Chrome browser menu.

3. Find and edit or share your screenshot

Once these keys are touched, ChromeOS (the operating system Chromebooks use) displays a notification indicating that a grab has been made. This will be visible for approximately ten seconds before clearing itself.

Your screenshot will be saved automatically with a filename comprising the date and time. If you’re familiar with the Windows copy-and-paste method, you can also enable Clipboard saving.

There are two more built-in screenshot options available on Chromebooks: cropped to an area and the current window, but the latter is undocumented and its support is unknown.

1. Screenshot a cropped area of your screen

To grab a cropped area press Ctrl + Shift + show window keys. The mouse cursor will change to a crosshair, this enables you to draw a rectangle around the area you would like to capture.

2. (Optional) Screenshot a specific window

We discovered you can also easily capture select windows by pressing the Ctrl + Alt+ show window keys. The next window you click on will be captured in a screenshot.

3. Find and edit or share your screenshot

Similar to the previous technique, a notification will appear in the bottom-right corner of your Chromebook’s display, and the file will be saved automatically with the date and time as the filename.

FAQS

Where are Chromebook screenshots saved?

If you’ve accumulated a large number of Chromebook screenshots in a row and want to go back through them to weed out the bad ones and select the ones you want to preserve, then navigate to the Downloads folder. Your screenshots will be saved as PNG files in this folder.

If you’re unsure how to locate them, hit the Search button, enter ‘files’, launch the Files app, and select Downloads from the left-hand shortcut list.

How do you screenshot on a Chromebook using the clipboard?

If you’re accustomed to how Windows 10 handles screenshots, in which they are copied directly to the clipboard rather than saved automatically, you may replicate this behaviour on your Chromebook… to a degree.

When you capture a screenshot on a Chromebook, pay special attention to the notice that displays the screenshot. This has a ‘Copy to clipboard’ button at the bottom.

Clicking this button makes the grab available for pasting into documents or manipulation in any image editor you’re using.
